Overview

If we are to believe the history of New Orleans as told through the city’s tourism industry, it is a city steeped in Gallic-Creole traditions and preserved in a design motif of antebellum architecture, a narrative constantly pressing its claim upon cultural uniqueness. This seminar will invite participants to challenge key aspects of New Orleans mythology by confronting the notion of its exceptionality. Grounded in historical process, we will explore how the movement of people and ideas not only produced the New Orleans we know, but also tied it to wider global currents.

Travel & Accommodations

Participants are responsible for making their own travel arrangements; the Institute will provide a travel stipend of $350. Read the policy here.

The Historic New Orleans Collection is located in New Orleans, Louisiana, approximately 15 miles from Louis Armstrong International Airport, and is easily reached by taxi, car, or shuttle.

Workshop participants will stay in a nearby hotel and will share rooms. Participants should bring laptops.

Meals

Meals will be served in a space shared by other programs. All on-site meals will be paid for by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.
