Gilder Lehrman Collection #: GLC01450.013.01 Author/Creator: Savage, Gideon (1751-1833) Place Written: s.l. Type: Autograph manuscript Date: 1773-1783 Pagination: 72 p. ; 14.7 x 9.8 cm.

Summary of Content: On pages 55 to 65, there are brief daily entries from 1 June 1777 to 1 March 1778, a period in which Savage served as a Corporal of Artillery and Artificer for the Connecticut Continental Line in the Continental Army. These entries record troop movements, military engagements, news received, and the weather. Also refers to Savage's arrival at Valley Forge on 19 December 1777 and occasions he described as "still working at the generals Washington" on 9-10 January 1778 and 12 February 1778. Savage was a carpenter by trade, and he was possibly working on a log cabin Washington had built for dining in. A missing leaf creates a gap in entries between 10 January and February 7 1778. Before page 55, the journal contains brief entries made in random places that date between 1773 and 1783. Most are account lists that enumerate supplies or foodstuffs (often to be purchased), or work (quantified in days). Many have been crossed out. After page 65, there are random entries dating from Savage's service during the Revolutionary War. Additional papers and research in an accompanying wooden box/chest (GLC01450.013.02).
